Your price
$130.00
- Cost
- $100.00
- Profit
- $30.00
- Markup
- 30.0%
- Margin
- 23.1%
A 30.0% markup gives a 23.1% margin. Markup is always the bigger number, so pricing at “30% markup” when you meant 30% margin leaves money on the table.
Questions
- What's the difference between markup and margin?
- Markup is profit as a share of your cost. Margin is profit as a share of the price. A $100 cost sold for $130 is a 30% markup but only a 23% margin.
- How do I turn a margin into a markup?
- Markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin). For a 25% margin you need a 33.3% markup.
- What markup should I use on materials?
- Many service businesses mark materials up 15–50% to cover ordering, pickup, storage, waste and warranty callbacks. Check what's normal in your trade and area.
