Questions
- How do I calculate my hourly rate?
- Add the yearly take-home pay you want (grossed up for income tax) to your yearly business costs, add a profit buffer, then divide by the hours you can actually bill in a year.
- Why not just divide my salary by 2,080 hours?
- Because you can't bill every hour. Driving, quoting, buying materials and admin take a third or more of your week, and you need holidays and sick days.
- Should I charge hourly or a flat price?
- Flat prices are easier for clients to say yes to and reward you for working quickly. Use your hourly rate to work out the flat price.
